There is a common misconception that teeth are cleaned the best when they are given a vigorous rub. People think that the food particles remain jammed between their teeth and they should be swept out using maximum force. However, this is not something that is recommended by dentists at all. Hard brushing of teeth and gums using the hardest bristles will do more damage than good.
When we use hard bristles to clean our teeth, we tend to damage our gums and the enamel covering of the teeth. The enamel is the hardest substance of the human body and still it breaks down under the impact of hard toothbrush bristles. Hard bristles are especially damaging if you have teeth or gum diseases. If you are in the habit of using hard bristles, then make sure you use the toothbrush gently. Instead of rubbing the teeth and gum, you should massage them. And unless the doctor recommends so, using hard bristles has to be a no-no, if possible.
Toothbrush bristles come in three types – hard, medium and soft. Most dentists recommend soft bristles that are rounded at the edges. These are soft on the teeth and the gum while cleaning perfectly well. With soft, rounded bristles, we actually massage our teeth and gums. Whatever food particles are lodged inside our teeth come out easily enough even when we use soft bristles. Additionally, massaging the gums and the teeth keeps them healthy and gets them going on for longer periods. While they are good for everyone, soft, rounded bristles are ideal for kids and those with teeth and gum problems.
Medium bristles are also recommended by doctors, especially for adults. As adults, our food habits change completely and we eat complex food that causes more bacteria. To remove the bacteria and the plaque they cause, soft bristles may not be enough at times. Medium bristles are ideal in these cases. However, vigorous brushing is still not recommended and we should stay in the massage mode.
The technology associated with the manufacture of toothbrushes has led manufacturers to come up with different kinds of bristles. While some toothbrushes have smaller bristles, some others have longer ones. Longer bristles have a wider reach inside the mouth and can clean more effectively. However, longer bristles are for adults and not children. They will be too big for kids. We also have color coded bristles these days that tell us when it is time to replace our toothbrush.
The modern toothbrushes are designed in a way to ensure maximum reach within the mouth. Invest in a good toothbrush and have your teeth shining and clean. Make sure you properly wash the toothbrush after use and keep it in a clean, dry place. For the best results, your toothbrush should not be used for more than 3-4 months.
Brushing is all about personal hygiene. As long as you are using a proper toothbrush and brushing your teeth at least twice a day, you should have no problem with your teeth.
