Have you ever wondered if the toothpaste you use everyday is safe to be used?
If you check the contents of your tooth paste, you are likely to find fluoride and triclosan.
Researchers have raised concerns about the use of both these chemicals because of their high toxicity. These chemicals are known carcinogens and the overdose of these chemicals could lead to serious health problems.
The use of fluoride in toothpastes helps in making your teeth stronger and more resistant to dental caries. The overdose of fluoride , however can weaken your teeth and bones. It is also a known poison and carcinogen.
Triclosan is used in most of the well-known toothpastes. It is also used in a wide range of products like soaps, hand washes and shaving gels as an antibacterial agent.
The FDA needs to determine if Triclosan is safe to be used regularly.
Earlier studies concluded that triclosan containing toothpastes were more effective than those without.
However, concerns have been raised about the effects of triclosan on the human endocrine system .
It could also help in creating antibiotic bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics.
Researchers are calling for a complete ban on the use of triclosan ,as regular exposure to this chemical can damage the endocrine system especially in children.
Recent studies concluded that triclosan reacts with chlorine present in tap water to form chloroform and other toxic byproducts.
The American dental association maintains that these studies do not apply to toothpastes.
However, more research needs to be performed to study the ill effects of these chemicals .
