How many times you said this to refuse a nasty offer? May be hundreds of times.
You must think that root canal treatment is the sum of all dental fears. Believe me, it is not.
In fact, root canal treatment procedures are painless if done properly. Nowadays, root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is the treatment of choice for many dental problems.
Let’s know more about root canal treatment.
Endodontic is a Greek word, that can be divided into two parts; the first is “endo” which means inside, and the second part is “odons” which means the tooth. So, endodontic treatment means treatment done inside the tooth. American Dental Association defines endodontics as the branch of dentistry involving the treatment of the tooth pulp and the surrounding tissue.
Root canal treatment is indicated in cases when the pulp of the tooth is exposed by caries or trauma. Because, the pulp of the tooth is full of nerves and rich in blood supply, it causes a lot of pain when it is exposed or infected. It is said that the severity of pain after pulp exposure comes in the second place after human bone fractures. Can you believe this?
It is true to say that your dentist is saving you a lot of pain and suffering by offering you an endodontic treatment for your tooth.
The procedures of root canal treatment are simple and completely painless; all the work is done under local anesthesia.
The following diagram will help you to understand all about it:
By using a special drill, the roof of the pulp chamber of the affected tooth is removed to expose the pulp tissue completely, and then the injured pulp tissue will be removed from the pulp chamber and from associated root canals as well, this will be done by the help of special endodontic instruments called endodontic files, which are fabricated carefully from precious flexible elements like nickel titanium, to fit the sizes of all root canals.
The root canal will be obturated by an edodontic natural filling material like gutta percha, the root apices are sealed as well. The crown of endodontically treated tooth can be restored by a permanent filling or a crown.
For a skilled endodontist, these procedures will take no time. The all procedure can be finished in 3-4 visits to the dental clinic.
But what about the costs of root canal treatment? I am telling you “yes, endodontic treatment is expensive”, but this is not compared to the costs you will have to pay to restore your missing tooth if you decided to extract it.
