For All Dental Phobias, Sleep Dentistry Works Like Magic

by Yusuf

All over the world, fear of dental clinic is becoming a serious problem. In the United States, for example, 4 persons out of 5 have admitted being terrified from all dentists. Unfortunately, it is estimated that at least one out of seven Americans never try to get any dental care at all due to their own dental phobia. Likely, sleep dentistry is the treatment of choice for such cases.

According to Journal of American Dental Association; there are three different kinds of dental fear, including; dental anxiety, dental fear and dental phobia.

Dental anxiety

dental anxiety
It usually occurs in reaction to an unknown new danger. Actually, more than seventy five percent of people in United States are suffering from a sort of dental anxiety when they visit the dental office. This is mainly due to expecting to experience an unknown painful procedure at the dentist’s.

Dental fear

Dental fear is the reaction to a known type of danger, like experiencing dental work which had been previously done, either by the hands of careless dentist with extreme pain, or hearing painful stories from friends or family members.

Dental phobia

It is the exaggerated version of dental fear. While patients suffering from dental fear will experience their fear when they are approaching the dental clinic or entering the treatment room, patients with dental phobia will experience terrified physical response for just mentioning the word dentist or dental clinic.

Usually, patients with extreme dental phobias need special treatment measures as they are not able to even approach dental office; sleep or sedation dentistry (sometimes called anxiety free dentistry)is an excellent treatment option for treating most types of dental fears; it offers the perfect painless solution.

Moreover, sedation dentistry is also suitable for patients who:

  • Are unable to tolerate the numbness sensation accompanying the conventional dental treatment
  • Suffer from teeth sensitivity
  • Suffer from sensitive gagging reflux
  • Need multiple complicated dental procedures which can take several hours or a lot of dental visits
  • Afraid of needles
  • Have some embarrassments towards their teeth.
  • Suffer from mental, physical or medical problems which can prevent conventional dental treatment.
  • Need to be completely relaxed and comfortable during their dental treatment, and to remember nothing about this experience.

There are two types of sedation dentistry; oral Sedation and IV Sedation.

Oral sedation dentistry utilizes certain pills or tablets taken orally to start a state of sleep or relaxation, while IV sedation dentistry uses certain drugs given intravenously (via the blood) to perform the same effect.

Most dentists prefer IV sedation dentistry, because it really gives the dentist great control over the adjustment of the sedative drug dose, plus it is safer and more predictable than oral sedative drugs. In IV sedation dentistry, the dentist can simply increase or decrease the level of the sedative drug according to each case.
