Cloves: Why are they great for your Teeth?

by Navneet

Clove and clove oil have been used as breath fresheners since 3rd Century BC when the Chinese started using it. Later on, Avicenna, who was the teacher of Hippocrates, also used clove oil to treat rotten teeth and gum. Clove oil is one of the essential oils that are considered good for our teeth. Mothers and dentists all over the oil still use clove oil whenever there is a toothache.

When we go to a medicine store, we can find hundreds of mouthwashes and toothpastes that promise to take absolute care of our teeth. Despite the availability of so many different products for tooth care, the number of people suffering from tooth and gum related diseases have been on the rise. It is said that our modern lifestyle, including the type of food that we take, directly affects our teeth and gum. The chemicals in the food affect our teeth and cause tooth decay and bad breath. The various chemicals used in dental products, unlike what they claim, actually make the situation worse.

The look of so many tooth care products stacked in a departmental store is very tempting and it is hard to ignore these products. All of them claim to have something or the other to make our teeth looking shining white and our mouth smelling spring fresh. However, for the best care of your teeth and gum, you don’t need to spend so much. Buy some cloves and start using them. You will have less dental problems and a fresher mouth.

That is why many people still depend on clove and clove oil as dental remedies. The biggest advantage of clove is that it relives the pain in the teeth and the gum. Even dentists sometimes use clove oil as anodyne to numb the affected area inside our mouth before they start treating the disease. It is an excellent home remedy for tooth and gum related diseases and is widely used. It has strong natural antiseptic properties that reduce teeth infection.

Clove also acts as mouth freshener. If you suffer from bad breath, then instead of chewing a gum, you might want to try and put a pill of clove in your mouth. You just need to roll it in your mouth and chew it slightly from time to time. Your mouth will feel fresh throughout the day. Clove has a strong, woody smell that feels wonderful to the person you are conversing with.

You will often see singers pop in clove pills before they enter the stage. This is because clove has another wonderful property. It clears and relieves sore throats. If you have a sore throat, don’t go for medicines at the drop of a hat. Try having some cloves throughout the day and very soon, your throat will clear and you should be able to sing like a lark.

The main constituents of the essential oil in clove are phenylpropanoids like carvacrol, eugenol, thymol, and cinnamaldehyde. Eugenia caryophyllata’s biological effectiveness was investigated on many parasites and microorganisms like Herpes simplex, pathogenic bacteria, and hepatitis C. It is seen that it has antioxidant, antiviral, antimicrobial, and antifungal activity. The essential oil in clove also possesses cytotoxic, antiinflammatory, and anaesthetic properties and can act as insect repellent.

Cloves have been in use for centuries and there has to be some reason for their popularity. Use cloves yourself and see your dental issues come down to next to nothing.

Always on the lookout for “alternative” remedies. Kind of ‘ancient wisdom’ goiig on here. I dig it.
