10 Commandments for a healthy smile
Dental health is like any other health aspect of our body. We need to take care of it to ensure it’s in good shape. People who do not take good care of their teeth are the ones that often end up at the dentist with dental problems and have to undergo extensive, expensive and uncomfortable procedures to treat them. As the age old saying goes, “prevention is better than cure”. Fortunately for us, there are no time consuming, complex or painful efforts involved to maintain dental hygiene.
Sane Dentist recommends you follow these 10 commandments to ensure good dental health.
- 1. Brush your teeth twice daily: Brushing your teeth twice a day is a must. Brushing once a day is not good enough. It’s also equally important that you brush your teeth correctly.
2. Floss your teeth: Flossing forms an integral part of dental hygiene. Flossing removes the plaque and food debris in between your teeth where the toothbrush cannot reach.
- 3. Use a Mouth Wash: Mouthwashes possess useful anti-bacterial properties which help control the bacterial plaque which causes bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease. Listerine and chlorohexidine mouth washes are often recommended by the dentists.
- 4. Eat the right food: Maintaining a balanced diet helps in preventing tooth decay. Excessive starchy(potato chips, snacks) and sugary foods (Candies, gums) should be avoided as much as possible as they are often responsible for causing tooth decay.
- 5. Avoid in between snacking habits: Snacking habits in between meals upset the Ph level in the oral cavity and make the teeth prone to teeth decay. Avoid snacking between meals.
6. Stay away from Cola/Pop: Sugary drinks such as Cola, energy drinks have harmful acids in them which are harmful for your teeth. Keep their consumption to a minimum. Avoid sipping on them for a long time and rinsing your mouth after drinking helps minimize their effects.
- 7. Kick the Cigarette: Smoking has innumerable harmful affects in the oral cavity such as stains, smoker’s breath, increase risk for cancer, impairs healing etc apart from general harmful affects. Kick the habit for a great smile.
- 8. Chew Sugar-free gum: Chew sugar-free gum containing xylitol which fights bad breath and helps prevent tooth decay.
- 9. Visit your dentist regularly: People have the nasty habit of not going to the dentist until they experience a problem. Most dental problems do not show significant symptoms till they have progressed to an advanced stage. Going for a visit to your dentist once in 3-6 months is necessary to identify any dental problems and treat them in their nascent stage.
- 10. Oral piercings: Oral piercings might be great for fashion but not for your dental health. Oral piercings on your tongue or lip can have nasty affects such as allergic reactions, infections, nerver damage etc. So, stay away from them.
So, these are the 10 dental health commandments the Sane Dentist recommends you follow for a beautiful and healthy smile.
